Local artists and climate activists circle an altar of flowers, needles, branches, and pinecones at an Interdependence Gathering before embarking on a group dreaming session.
Interdependence is a collaborative project born from the Liminal Space Collective, where art and environmental stewardship intersect. Our goal is to showcase sustainable, caring, and interdependent futures that foster reciprocity between the Santa Cruz community and our amazing marine coastal ecosystem. Our belief is that people from all backgrounds and all experience levels can be both sustainability activists and artists.
We aim to highlight the historical significance of this land, connect individuals to existing local ecological actions and research, and empower people to reintegrate our society with the land and the diverse beings that inhabit it. Our project centers on justice, wonder, care, and the creative potential of our community.
To embody these values, we are curating a collection of art projects and installations representing four biomes of the Santa Cruz ecosystem:
redwood forest
wetland delta
coastal wildflower prairie
kelp forest and tidepools
Each biome will be represented by two types of sculptural art: larger-than-life “macro” structures that replicate essential species using upcycled materials, and miniature “micro” diorama-style structures that showcase how humans can live sustainably and reciprocally within these ecosystems.
Stay connected to the project through the Liminal Space Discord server. Select "interdependence" from Channels & Roles during server set up.

Past Projects
Interdependence debuted our Fallen Pollen installation at the 2025 UnSCruz "Cosmic Odyssey" Festival. This upside-down emulation of native flower, grass, and pollinator species, made of mostly trash and donated materials, honored our local coastal wildflower prairie biome.
